Opinions differ, especially when it comes to wine, whether it is a debate on what the best wine gadgets are or simply whether Right bank is better than Left bank or this region's Chardonnay better that that region. The one thing we all agree on is the actual drinking of the wine. Wine tastings and events, wine clubs and purely enjoying wine with meals has been common practise for centuries.
Today wine gadgets can greatly enhance your drinking experience and make sharing wine a much more memorable occasion. Since we are talking 'tasting', we better be talking preserving as well; as tasting generally does refer to 'smaller' serving sizes and often not whole bottle consumption (but who are we to define the actual amounts!).

We know you have the low down on swishing, swirling, sniffing (and spitting) so 'read more' on what we recommend you use.
Clef du Vin (Wine Key)
You might have seen this strange little gadget being carried around by some, or you are simply giving us a raised-eyebrow stare while thinking "how is something that looks like a guitar pic relevant to wine!". The 'Clef du Vin' is a wine gadget alright, and it is able to mimic the aging potential of your wine in seconds. In other words an "instant wine age-er". One second, yes only 1, is equal to one year of aging (talk about time flying when you having fun!). The Idea is to taste your wine after each 1 second submersion and decide after how many years of storage your wine would be most enjoyed by you (or your wine club). The bottle at hand, or each glass for that matter, can however be enjoyed at any age (according to preference)- regardless of the vintage on the bottle.

CORAVIN Ever wished that you could only taste a wine or have only one glass and didn't have to open the whole bottle? CORAVIN uses a needle to pierce right through the cork (without damaging or breaking the cork) and then pumps Argon gas (don't worry it is harmless) to displace the wine through the needle into your glass. The Argon gas also acts as a protective barrier for the wine, against the oxygen in the bottle, meaning the bottle can continue to age for several more years. In simple terms: one glass or sip, no wastage, no leakage, no oxidation. |
While we are talking ageing and preservation, here are some more interesting options if you (or rather your wallet) is finding the above mentioned gadgets a bit much, for your "I-just-want-to-enjoy-wine" palate.
Wouldn't it be fun to host your own wine tasting with friends? Or actually have the wine club over to show off your "tasting-gadgets"? Here are some very useful, but also educational and "this-will-make-my-life-so-much-easier" wine gadgets to choose from.
In order to have a wine tasting, you would actually need some wine! Some wine carriers to help you with the transport situation.
